What is the most common dental emergency?

The most frequent dental emergency is a toothache. It could be the result of a cavity or even teeth grinding. Whether you have a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and floss the affected area to examine if any food or other debris has become lodged and could be causing some irritation in that area.

If you have swelling, you can use an ice pack. DO NOT use anything warm to press against the affected area. We also recommend you contact your local emergency dentist before taking any pain medication. Allow them to ask you the right questions to determine the best course of action.

Neglecting cavities is another common dental problem we see often and can eventually become an emergency treatment. Do not leave these untreated when first discovered.

How To Prevent Dental Emergencies

There is always something you can do to prevent dental emergencies. These however will never protect you 100% of the time. But if you get in the habit of keeping a few of these tips always present, you will greatly reduce chances of something going wrong.

Don't miss your regular dentist appointments

If you have a scheduled appointment, which we recommend every six months, make sure you go. Give your local dentist an opportunity to spot potential issues way ahead of time and before they become a dental emergency.

Follow through on your oral hygiene at home

Be honest with yourself. You know whether you are brushing two or three times per day, flossing after each meal, consuming excessive amounts of sugar-type foods, and drinking plenty of water. If not, what are you waiting for?

Keep an eye on your daily diet

Sugar is all over the place. You should spend some time understanding the effects of sugar on your teeth and why this is really bad for your oral health.

Wear a mouthguard when required

What type of sport(s) are you doing? Do you grind your teeth when you sleep or when you are feeling anxious? Getting a mouthguard or a night guard to protect your teeth is just so simple!

Don't use your mouth for anything other than speaking and eating

There are countless people who use their mouth to open packages, tear up envelopes, and even remove bottle caps. You are putting your oral health at risk, plain and simple. Don't do it!
